MID-CENTURY
MODERN
~
Asheville
We came on to this project halfway to completion. The drywall was just hung and most of the exterior cladding installed. Few of the finishes had been selected so there was still a lot of opportunity to develop the "feel" for how the house would be lived in. The homeowners were fantastic throughout the process.

A Sleek, open floor plan. Master suite and mother-in-law suite both on main level. Placed on opposite sides of the home to provide privacy. Two more bedrooms on the lower level complete this eminently livable 3,800 sq. ft. home.

Positioned to take advantage of the southern light, the expansive glazing ensures that each room is open, well-lit, and inviting. The architect and home owners did a tremendous job in making sure that no space was underlit, and that the home maintained a welcoming flow throughout.

Take note of the waterfall island. It's such a clean look. Really love the way that it extends beyond the edges of cabinets and appliances, it recesses both giving them a solid, built-in feel. It's nice to have the durability of granite on the sides as opposed to paneling and kick plates too.

Opposite the kitchen is the main living area. Stack stone fireplace flanked by full-lite patio doors. The client chose a number of varying door heights throughout the home. These 7'0" doors were perfect for the side exit. Any larger and they would have likely competed too much for attention with the fireplace. The homes roof is a single-pitch and low slope. Beginning height 10' at the entrance, the home gradually opens to full 12' ceiling height at the rear.
The living room opens through the matching doors onto a large deck with beautiful wooded views. Three-fourths of the deck space remains covered under the homes single pitch low-slope roof, providing a comfortable sitting area no matter the weather. Bringing decks under the roof is always a good decision for comfort and extending the deck life.
"Death by a thousand miter cuts." A cool little trim detail that we designed. Reminiscent of the Greek Meandros. Preferring the square edge of the stair to the traditional bullnose, the client wanted a trim accent that matched the modern touch of the home. Traditional stair skirt board was therefore out of the question. We worked on several options before ultimately coming up with this particular accent. The trim works best being painted the same color as the wall. The thin stock simply doesn't have the depth to stand out on its own, but offers a modest transition between the wall and stair. A subtle, unassuming trim that complements the stairs angular strength. The clean lines are well-fitting of the home.

Custom built barn doors. There were really large openings in the home for the kitchen pantry and a lower-level study. The homeowners wanted doors similar in style to the 3-panel shaker doors throughout the house. They wanted an aged and weathered look but didn't want the typical sanded down distressed cabinet door appearance. They eventually decided upon a two-tone wash color. It involved rolling on a base coat and then layering multiple top coats with a lighter color on top. The water base stain is wiped off which gives the doors a stark depth. The stain reacts quickly so while the doors look similar, they each have their own individual patina. The final product is beautiful. The pictures don't do the color justice.
Everyone's favorite feature of the home: the 5.5 inch wide oak hardwoods throughout. The Scandinavian inspired stain color did not come easily. This floor finish is a testament to patience and endurance and persistence. Initially leaning toward a hickory stain, after the floor sanding a soft gray was revealed. It was perfect. The initial floor contractor believed the color could be maintained with a particular clear coat. Fortunately we tested it out on a single room. It was a disaster. The floors went all shades of gold and red. It resembled a barn floor. It had to go and was re-sanded. Bona Nordicseal stain ended up perfect.
